Blabber Girls.
What are the Blabber Girls, you ask? Last year, my Soul Sister Jean thought we should start a book club, so we gathered Tristine, Julie and Heather and off we went! The rest of us all work for the same company and Jean had just left, so needless to say we talked about work a LOT. Mostly bad stuff, venting, getting things off our chests.
Since that first night, another co-worker Kathy was initiated into the club, but the talk about work becomes less and less and, well, the talk about chests becomes more and more.
But back to how our name started. Heather brought her young son Christopher with her to the first club. He patiently sat their through dinner, drinks and yes, even the book talk. He was adorable and laughed with…er, at…us most of the night.
As the night was winding to a close we decided that we needed a name. What should be call ourselves? We threw out suggestions which allude me now but I’m pretty sure they had to do with laughing and/or being loud. Christopher chimed in with, “You should call yourselves the Blabber Girls because all you do is talk talk talk.”
Well, he was right of course and the name stuck. Heather even had shirts made.
Whatever anyone else tells you about women and book clubs, the Blabber Girls DO talk about the book, sometimes at length if we really liked it. But it is so much more than that.
As women, we tend to become our husband’s wife or our children’s mother and forget about taking some time for ourselves. Book club is more about female bonding. We cheer each other on, tell it like it is. We laugh, we cry, we tell each other things we haven’t told anyone else and maybe even never admitted to ourselves until that moment we blurted it out.
I’m sure every single one of us has dreaded an upcoming book club for one reason or another. Most of these times come out of our own damaged self-esteem, our lack of mental or physical energy. But I know for me that all changes once I’m in the door and by the time I’ve returned home I was so glad I went. I usually feel full, buzzed and happy, am in a non-stop-talking mood and could run a marathon.
I am creating this blog to talk about one of the greatest passions in my life…reading. But I am also creating it to honor my ladies. Cheers, Blabber Girls!
